U.S. Address Change Checklist

A checklist to help you update your address in all the right places when moving within the U.S. Use the table of contents below to jump to each category.

Tip: Wait until your move is official (lease signed, etc.) before making address changes. Plans can fall through at the last minute, and you don't want to undo everything.

🏛️ Government-Related

  • Submit an official USPS Change-of-Address Form
  • Update your address with the Social Security Administration
  • Update your address with the IRS (or update when you file your next tax return)
  • Get a new driver's license with your new address
  • Update your vehicle registration (may happen automatically with license renewal, depending on state)
  • Submit a new voter registration form with your new address (search for "[your county] [your state] voter registration")
  • If you're a male aged 18-25, update your address with the Selective Service System
  • If you have a Marketplace health insurance plan (ACA/Obamacare), update your address on HealthCare.gov
  • Update your passport address (optional until renewal)

If staying in the same area, notify your providers. If moving far, you'll need to find new ones.

  • Primary care doctor
  • Specialists (dentist, eye doctor, dermatologist, etc.)
  • Therapist or mental health provider
  • Local pharmacy
  • Veterinarian (if you have pets)
  • Dog walker, pet sitter, or groomer
  • Attorney or estate planner
  • Update address on will or trust documents
  • Accountant or tax preparer

💼 Work & Business

  • Update your address with your employer's HR/payroll department
  • If you're self-employed, update your address with clients who send you 1099s
  • Update your address with any professional licenses or certifications
  • If you have a registered business, update your address with the state

  • Transfer or cancel utilities at old address (gas, electric, water, trash)
  • Set up utilities at new address
